5 Winter Activities on the Mississippi
DateJanuary 27, 2017
Don’t let winter bring you down!
Sure, wind and snow might stop you from going to see a baseball game, and you definitely won’t be able to take a stroll through a local garden, but there’s still a ton to do while you wait for the warm weather to come back.
Isle Casino® Hotel Bettendorf wants to fill you in on five of the top winter activities on the Mississippi River, in hopes that you’ll get out of the house sometime between now and spring!
1. Eagle Watching
There’s no bird more fascinated by the snow than bald eagles. Every winter, they migrate south from Canada and might even end up right in your backyard. From December until February, these majestic national birds spend most of the winter along the Mississippi River, where the open water provides prey for these fish-eaters. One good spot to consider is the trail in Hasting’s River Flats Park.
2. Ice Fishing
Minnesota is commonly-associated with ice fishing, and rightfully so. Make sure to take all of the proper precautions when considering ice fishing. If you do, you’ll be well on your way to catching tons of Sunfish – Bluegills and pumpkinseeds are among the most commonly caught panfish in Minnesota. Northern Pike, Crappies and Largemouth bass are unusual ice fishing catches, but are occasionally caught on jigging poles or on tip-ups.
3. Hiking & Cross-Country Skiing
Enjoy winter hiking and cross-country skiing at any number of local sites, like Black Hawk State Historic Site, Loud Thunder Forest Preserve or Scott County Park.
4. Tour Local Museums
For a family-friendly activity, try a tour of local museums. The interactive science center at the Putnam Museum is worth exploring, and the award-winning Figge Art Museum will have you releasing your inner artist.
5. Isle Casino® Hotel Bettendorf
With dining options like Keller’s® American Grill, Keller’s® Express, Farmer’s Pick Buffet® and The Lone Wolf®, Isle Casino® Hotel Bettendorf will be your home away from home this winter. Keller’s® American Grill offer classics with modern twists and big flavors.
